Moving with Pets - Everything you should know

5 Real-Life Tips for Moving with Pets

A man in socks stands beside a black and white cat in a bright room filled with cardboard boxes and houseplants, preparing for a move. The scene captures a peaceful moment during packing by Toronto movers and packers.

Let’s face it, moving’s already enough of a hassle. Throw a pet into the mix and it’s just... more. Cats get skittish, dogs get all needy, and nobody’s routine makes sense anymore.

It’s not just about boxes and furniture. Pets feel the stress too. They notice the change, the noise, the tension. They need a bit of extra care to not totally freak out. These four tips aren't perfect, but they helped us, and maybe they’ll help you too.

Step 1: Get Your Pet’s Stuff Ready Early

A few days before the move, throw together a bag with your pet’s stuff. Food, water, meds, their favorite toy. Don’t forget the litter box or pee pads or whatever they use. And keep that bag with you. Definitely not in the moving truck. If their bed or litter box smells a bit funky, leave it. That familiar scent can actually help them stay calm when everything else is upside down.

Step 2: Give Your Pet Their Own Space

If you can, set aside a room just for your pet on moving day. Clear it out so there’s no reason for movers to go in and out. That way, your pet stays safe and out of the chaos.

Can’t dedicate a whole room? No big deal. You can always move them to the bathroom for a bit, or just pop them into a carrier or crate. The point is to keep them away from all the noise, doors opening, and people rushing around. Trust me, it helps.

Step 3: Keep Moving Day Chill (for Them, Anyway)

Moving day is chaos. People everywhere, doors constantly opening, loud noises. Pets hate that kind of thing. Best move? Stick them in a quiet room, close the door, and let them stay out of the way. Or, even better, drop them off with someone they know just for the day. Less stress for them, and you’re not chasing a runaway cat down the driveway.

Step 4: Make the Ride Not Suck

If your pet’s riding with you in the car, set them up right. Crate or carrier with a soft blanket, maybe a toy they love. The idea is to make it feel safe, kinda like home. For long trips, plan a couple breaks. Let them stretch, get some water, maybe take a breather. Not sure what’s best? Ask around. Someone’s always got a trick.

Step 5: Let Them Settle Their Way

Once you’re in the new place, before doing anything else, set up your pet’s little corner. Doesn’t need to be perfect, just familiar. Their bed, food and water, litter box, maybe that ratty old toy they won’t let go of. It helps them feel like, “Okay... weird place, but this feels like mine.” Everything else can wait.
